MANILA - The Social Security System said Monday it was working to offer online filing of unemployment benefit for workers who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The online filing could be available as early as April, said SSS president and CEO Aurora Ignacio. Applications are currently on an over-the counter basis.

The state-run pension fund is "prepared" to pay up to P1.2 billion in unemployment benefits, assuming a worst case scenario wherein 30,000 to 60,000 jobs will be lost, the Finance Department earlier said.

"Minadali namin na matapos siya hanggang April na maging online filing siya at maging available sa mga empleyado na nawalan ng trabaho dahil sa COVID-19," she added.

Due to its limited workforce, the SSS has yet to tally the number of displaced workers due to the pandemic, Ignacio said. Select offices are running on limited workforce, she added.
