MANILA - Alcohol supply in stores could 'normalize' soon as manufacturers continue to produce round the clock to meet a surge in demand due to COVID-19, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Friday.

"Tinawagan namin ang alcohol companies kahapon ang assurance sa amin 24 hours ang operations nila. Siguro magnonormalize ito in the days to come pero masasabi natin ngayon manipis talaga," Lopez told DZMM.

(We spoke with alcohol companies and they assured us that they are operating 24/7. It could normalize in the days to come but as of now supply is really thin)

Panic buying after the government placed Luzon under enhanced community quarantine wiped out stocks of disinfectant in stores, Lopez said.

Health authorities recommended frequent hand-washing and use of alcohol and disinfectant as protection against COVID-19.

Lopez said only medical experts could say if homemade disinfectant is effective.
