MANILA - Construction has started on the 27-kilometer Cavite segment of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Wednesday.

DPWH and Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. through its unit MPCALA Holdings are undertaking the project meant to speed up travel between the two adjacent provinces.

The Laguna segment of the CALAX, which spans 18 kilometers, began construction in June 2017.

“We are glad to announce that both the Cavite and Laguna segments are now under construction and are aimed for completion by 2020,” said Villar in a statement.

The P35.4-billion CALAX will connect Cavitex in Kawit, Cavite and end at the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) Mamplasan interchange in Biñan, Laguna.

CALAX will shave about 45 minutes off travel time between Cavitex and SLEX.

The toll road is also expected to reduce traffic congestion along major roads like Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway and the Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road.
