MANILA -- The US will make sure that the world has its "eyes wide open" on alleged risks from Huawei, but adopting the Chinese telecommunication giant's technology should be a "sovereign decision," Washington's top diplomat said Friday.

Competition in 5G and other technologies should be "open, free, transparent and we worry that Huawei is not that," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a joint news conference with Philippine Foreign Affairs Sec Teodoro Locsin Jr.

Shenzhen-based Huawei, the world's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and second biggest smartphone maker, has denied spying for Beijing.

"And so our task has been to share with the world the risks associated with that technology, the risks to the Philippine people, the risk to Philippine security, the risk that America may not be able to operate in certain environments if there's Huawei technology adjacent to that. Our task has been to share that information," Pompeo said.

"Every nation will then make its sovereign decision about how to proceed, that's appropriate, that's the right way to go. But we want to make sure the world has their eyes wide open as to the risks of having that technology," he said.

In the Philippines, dominant carriers PLDT and Globe are eyeing Huawei technology for their respective 5G rollouts.
