Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade went to Osaka, Japan on Wednesday to talk to Japanese officials about the tunnel-boring machines that will be used in the construction of the Metro Manila Subway.

Tugade visited Hitachi Zosen’s Sakai Works (HZSW), which makes equipment used to bore tunnels underground.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the 6.9-meter diameter tunnel-boring machine being considered for the subway project weighs over 600 tons.

"The machine has to be assembled in Japan for a test run. Upon passing the tests, the machine has to be disassembled, shipped to the Philippines in parts, where it will be assembled again for construction use," the DOTr said.
