MANILA—The Department of Trade and Industry discovered N95 masks that were of “very low quality” during a surprise inspection of several stores in Manila on Tuesday.
“This is not even medical grade. Itsurang N95 lang (It just looks like N95),” trade undersecretary Ruth Castelo said.
The fake masks could still let in particles that could trigger an asthma attack or a hypersensitivity attack.
The DTI also found seven stores selling N95 masks at excessive prices, up to P150 apiece.
It warned traders that charges will be filed against those overpricing masks amid high demand because of Taal volcano's eruption.
