I grew up wearing Ralph Lauren. I wore my first pink preppy shirt with the collar up. I wore out my madras shorts. My favorite reading chair is by RL Home. I sleep on his teddy bear sheets. My boxers, holes and all, have ponies on them. And I was married in a Purple Label Made to Measure double-breasted pinstripe suit.
As we are still in awe of his recent 50-year gala, and his first street wear collection with UK skate boarder clothier Palace, now, bear with me—pun intended—as I obsess over his current gesture to display his love for the all- American lifestyle.
Introducing the very first watches ever designed by Mr. Lauren for his famous Polo brand: the four unisex watches featuring uniquely styled teddy bears.
Yes, you heard me, teddy bears. Well, there are grown men fascinated by collectible Seiko Mickey Mouse watches – so why not teddy bears?
The Polo Bear Watch Collection features four different bears, each character inspired by Ralph Lauren’s signature dressing styles.
The Flag Bear wears the namesake sweater that originated on the runway in 1989, along with a denim jacket and jeans; Martini Bear is dressed in a tuxedo, boutonniere and embroidered velvet slippers, capturing the rakish confidence of Edwardian gentlemen and Thirties movie stars (and my personal favorite); Preppy Bear wears an Ivy League look with a repp tie, navy blazer and khaki pants; and Spectator Bear is decked out in a camel hair overcoat, sweatshirt and saddle oxfords for a day at the stadium.

For the horologist, this is no toy. The bears are hand-painted on lacquered cream white dials, accompanied by oxidized black Breguet-style hands and stainless steel 42mm by 10.4 mm round cases. The stainless-steel round cases are powered by a Swiss-made, caliber RL300-1 movement. The mechanical self-winding chronometer runs at a frequency of 28,000 vibrations per hour, featuring 25 jewels with an approximate 42-hour power reserve. The case includes a commemorative 50th anniversary plaque set over the rotary. The time pieces are manufactured in Switzerland in partnership with Compagnie Financière Richemont.
Photos show that each watch comes in the classic Polo tartan prep with each watch customizable with interchangeable straps made from necktie silk twill patterns (including tartan and repp stripe prints), as well as French calfskin or exotic alligator.
This current obsession—The Ralph Lauren Polo Bear Watch Collection—will retail for $2,000 USD and release in the near future online, and in flagship boutiques. Actually, Manila would be a great place to launch this too.
