The day after Independence Day, June 13, was a special date for ABS-CBN fans. It marked the return of select ABS-CBN shows on air via the new Kapamilya Channel. While many were comforted by the fact that they’d be doing something familiar again from their “old normal”—seeing favorite shows and their favorite stars on the small screen—a vast majority who rely on free TV basically felt left out. The Kapamilya channel, you see, is only available on cable TV, satellite subscription, and online. With little info surrounding its initial broadcast, people are asking a lot of questions about the new channel—from the pleasantly trivial to the suspicious and possibly controversial. So we decided to put them all together and supply the answers, too, just to clear the air.
What really is Kapamilya Channel?
It is a 24-hour channel that airs the programs produced and acquired by ABS-CBN. The channel is owned by ABS-CBN. It started becoming available June 13 on Sky Cable Channel 8 (SD) and Channel 167 (HD), Cable Link Channel 8, GSAT Direct TV Channel, members of the Philippine Cable & Telecommunications Association (PCTA), and other local cable and satellite TV providers nationwide. Viewers can also access it via the iWant app at iWant.ph—live streaming and on-demand. Filipinos based abroad can access most of the Filipino programs through the Kapamilya Channel on TFC Cable as well as IPTV and online.
What are the programs aired on this channel?
It will carry returning ABS-CBN programs such as FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, It’s Showtime, ASAP, The Voice Teens, the morning talk show Magandang Buhay, and the teleseryes Love Thy Woman and A Soldier’s Heart. The channel’s lineup also includes new shows such as the public service programs Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan with Judy Ann Santos and the Angel Locsin project, Iba ‘Yan!, akong with K dramas Familiar Wife and The World of A Married Couple.
There are no days when you can’t get your movie fix. On weekdays, there’s Kapamilya Blockbusters in the morning and Kapamilya Gold Hits in the afternoon. On weekends, there’s KB Family Weekend, Kapamilya Action Sabado, Super Kapamilya Blockbusters, and FPJ: Da King. Meanwhile, night owls can get movies via Movie Central Presents after midnight. (See complete program lineup below)
Are the ABS-CBN shows aired on ABS-CBN TV Plus?
Only two shows are available on TV Plus: FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, which airs at 8 P.M. on Cinemo; and It’s Showtime, which airs at 12 noon on Jeepney TV.
Why is it that only GMA Network/other channels, or a blank screen, appears in our TV Plus?
The temporary sign off of ABS-CBN TVplus Box/GO is due to the Cease and Desist order imposed by the National Telecommunications Commission last May 5, the day the ABS-CBN’s franchise expired. However, viewers can still use their TVplus Box to watch other digital channels available in their area.
At present, the TVplus channels Jeepney TV, Asianovela, Cinemo, Yey and Teleradyo are still accessible in different areas in Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Benguet, Pangasinan, Bacolod, and Iloilo. The said channels are fully off air in Batangas, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and in most parts of Pampanga, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.
How can those who don’t have cable, satellite TV, and internet subscriptions watch the Kapamilya Channel?
Unfortunately, at the moment, not everyone can watch it. But rest assured that ABS-CBN is continuously finding ways to reach a wider audience, so more people can watch their favorite ABS-CBN shows.
Will the other ABS-CBN programs also return on air?
For now, only the ones on the list will be aired. But do watch out for announcements about upcoming shows.
How will the shows on the Kapamilya Channel conduct their tapings amid the COVID-19 threat?
The Interagency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) allows TV and movie productions to tape/shoot as long as they follow safety protocols. The production team makes sure that all safety protocols are followed to protect the shows’ artists and crew.
Are live audiences allowed at It’s Showtime’s studio in ABS-CBN?
No. For everyone’s safety, the show doesn’t have a studio audience.
Are the operations of the Kapamilya Channel legal?
How come ABS-CBN is able to air its programs when it doesn’t have a franchise?
Because ABS-CBN is a content producer, it can produce programs for different platforms such as cable and online.
Is the Kapamilya Channel different from Channel 2?
Yes, it is different from Channel 2 and it doesn’t use the frequency of Channel 2.

Does it use other frequencies?
No. The Kapamilya Channel delivers its programs via cable and satellite TV operators, not through ABS-CBN.
Why was the Kapamilya Channel not made immediately available when Channel 2 was shut down?
ABS-CBN stopped the production of its teleseryes and live entertainment shows due to the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) implemented in March.
Will ABS-CBN Channel 2 still return on air?
The mission of ABS-CBN is to be in the service of the Filipino. Thus, it continues to find ways to reach a great majority of Filipino viewers. The Kapamilya Channel has a limited reach because there are more Filipinos who don’t have cable subscriptions and rely on free TV.
This is the reason why the company is doing its best to bring back ABS-CBN Channel 2 on air. Currently being heard at the House of Representatives are various bills that seek to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN.
Will ABS-CBN continue to pursue its franchise renewal application even if the Kapamilya Channel is already there?
