Pasigueños have it so good: they have Vico Sotto for a mayor who, if the praises from even non-Pasig residents are to be believed, is doing such a swell job taking care of his constituents’ basic needs —while trying to keep the city safe. Turns out the guy has a good second-in-command, too, in the person of Iyo Caruncho-Bernardo. The vice mayor recently started auctioning off his own sneaker collection to help fund COVID response initiatives.
Since kickstarting the fund drive on the first week of April, Bernardo has already plucked 30 pairs of sneakers from his closet and put them up for bid. His team even sought contributions from our basketball superstars and other celebrities. So far, Marlou Aquino, Danny Ildefonso, Mark Caguioa, Jerry Codiñera and LA Tenorio have given to the Vice Mayor’s cause, same with Senator Manny Pacquiao, news anchor Julius Babao, sneaker collector Bigboy Cheng, and influencer Carlo Ople.

The auction has already raised P340,000 from the sale of over 230 pairs of shoes. The auction usually kicks off via a Facebook Live after which interested viewers are given 3 days to bid—although people already start bidding on the Facebook Live broadcast. Items for auction have also since included jerseys from our sports stars, from PBA legend Allan Caidic to La Salle’s Martin Reyes.
“We want to invite more people to share their blessings so we can buy more food and essential items to meet the needs of our constituents during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Bernardo who is also a basketball fan, apart from being a sneaker enthusiast. Next thing the guy is putting up for auction: his very own Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 and his Giant Talon mountain bike, the proceeds from which will go directly to cancer and dialysis patients, and children of Heart Warrior Philippines.
The next Sneakers Auction for a Cause will be on Monday, May 18. Visit Vice Mayor Iyo Bernardo’s Facebook page.
