With the community quarantine coming into effect over Metro Manila today to address the growing COVID-19 situation, mass gatherings are now prohibited. Regular church activities, such as masses and worship services, have been similarly discouraged, and practical adjustments must be made. But with the Philippines being a devoutly religious country, many think that these economical activities can not be totally done away with.

With this, the local Catholic church and other faiths within Metro Manila are turning to social media and technology to offer hope and encouragement to their respective flocks. Many are broadcasting closed door services via Facebook livestream as a means to continually connect to their people.
While parishioners won’t be at the churches physically, Bishop Broderick Pabillo urges Catholics to not just watch the mass. “Since you know the time of the Mass, prepare yourselves well for it. Do not watch it with a cup of coffee in hand,” writes the apostolic administrator of Archdiocese in a message to the parishes. “Remember that you are praying this Eucharist with many other fellow Catholics not only in your parish, but all over the world.” He urges these virtual attendees to go through the mass readings, stay in reverent gesture throughout the proceedings, and for the whole household to join in.
In the same manner, non-Catholic denominations such as Victory Church have followed suit. “We will be maximizing technology because we believe in the value of meeting together, praying together, and worshipping together,” the church writes in a message to all its branches.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is also participating in online ecumenical activities, and will be streaming Lenten recollections via the Pontificio Collegio Filipino facebook group. The cardinal, now a Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples Prefect, will stream a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass from 3 to 4 P.M. and his Lenten Reflection from 9 to 10 P.M. Meanwhile, Pope Francis will also be celebrating Mass at the Casa Santa Marta for all those suffering from COVID-19, which will be aired on Sky Cable channel 210.
