It’s the museum like you’ve never seen it before

This is no longer the Casa Manila of your high school field trip. This is Casa Manila like you’ve never seen it before.

The Intramuros museum that depicts Philippine colonial lifestyle has been given a much needed makeover—or in this case a lot of editing and attention to detail. The man behind the effort: the architect Antón Mendoza.

“The approach was academic. I used references from the 19th century houses of the Ynchausti, Zóbel and Teús homes,” Mendoza tells ANCX when asked for his vision for the project, mentioning the Spanish-Filipino families whose lifestyles formed part of his inspiration.

Known for his refined aesthetic and informed appreciation for the old world, Mendoza was just the right person to take on the challenge. “In the 19th century, we were part of Spain and therefore the highest standards for a home was European. Intramuros, Manila was the capital. The taste was very sophisticated.”

Indeed, the place now looks more like a home, lived-in, and not just a place to display old objects. He gave areas their focal points, breathed new life into the stone-and-wood structure. “He opened the windows, removed a lot of items, rearranged everything etc. Pati kitchen ang ganda na,” says DOT Secretary Berna Romulo Puyat.

According to Puyat, Mendoza got in touch with Intramuros administration’s Guiller Asido December last year, with suggestions on how to improve the Casa. He offered his services, saying it would be one way to continue what former consultant Sonny Tinio, one of Mendoza’s mentors, was doing for the museum. He’s been working on the project in the past month, even recommending the restoration of some furniture pieces.

“I hope there is a renewed interest in Casa Manila and Intramuros,” says Mendoza. After working his wonders, investing the project with his trained eye, Intramuros should brace itself for the onslaught of visitors.

Casa Manila offers a glimpse of our history during the Spanish Colonial era. The 19th century mansion was said to be the typical home of the affluent families back in the day. The museum, which is arranged in three floors, is a treasure trove of antique furniture, chandeliers, lamps, vases, artworks, and various kinds of curios.

The museum accommodates visitors Tuesdays through Sundays from 8 AM to 5 PM. They only allow 15 visitors at a time or 5 persons when in a group. Alcohol dispensers and signages are placed all over the place. As part of the safety protocols, guests need to register via their QR contact tracing, and have the option to pay the entrance fee via Beep or Paymaya. Entrance fee is P75 for adults, and P50 for students and persons with disabilities. Only those aged 15-65 will be allowed to enter, in line with current age restrictions.
