What will they bid on? Miguel Rosales’ picks for the Leon Gallery Spectacular Mid Year Auction

The art advisor, whose taste reveres the classics as well as the unexpected, will now make his recommendations.
ANCX | Jun 11 2020

Really look, and try to listen, Miguel Rosales once said in an interview when asked what one must do when in a gallery or museum. It’s the simplest advice but it’s also not the most followed (people so easily get lost in the socials), and we don’t doubt the art advisor and creative consultant has done a lot of it to be able to gain the kind of reputation he has in the arts and design universe.

Known to have a most discerning eye when spotting talent, and when putting together paintings and sculptures to make a space come alive—whether it’s a private residence or the public areas of the Shangri-la Fort, whether it’s something he’s doing for one of his terribly chic friends or a project for a corporate client— he’s the guiding light you want on your side, the guy whose recommendation holds a ton of weight.

That’s why Miguel is part of our host of tastemakers for the Leon Gallery Spectacular Mid Year Auction, the one happening this June 20. His choices among the 125 treasures might lead you to lots that might have skipped your attention.

ANCX does a first by collaborating with top auction house Leon Gallery for this much anticipated event. León Gallery specializes in museum-quality and historically important Philippine Art. Since its first auction in 2013, it has continued to establish record prices for Filipino Masters as well as modern and contemporary artists.

Below are Miguel’s choices:

Gray September by Raul Isidro

This Raul Isidro work, Gray September, resonates with its shaped field containing beautifully bold elements that contrast with each other while producing a wonderfully balanced whole that’s bursting with energy. I love this artists works from the 70s that are ripe for rediscovery.

Nena Saguil

A very rare early Nena Saguil that beautifully expresses the artist’s pioneering and very individual spirit on canvas. Done in Paris in 1958, this work resonates with its beautiful colors imbibed with an almost ancient yet timeless feel. It’s a work that draws one into it, inviting further exploration.

Juggler by Arturo Luz

I chose this work because it is quintessential Luz. It possesses the traits one should look for in his works: distinct iconography, precision of line, and compositional balance. The stripped down palette in black and white adds to the visual weight of this work.

Symphony (Quadriptych by Florencio B. Concepcion

A work that I am familiar with by an artist I admire. This huge, rare format four-panel work by the late modern maestro Florencio B Concepcion commands attention and is a great example of this period in his oeuvre. Pulsating with flashes of color in a rhythm that is signature Concepcion, this is definitely a standout by an artist who is experiencing a reappraisal of his contributions to the timeline of modern art in the Philippines.

Tryst by Lao Lianben

A gorgeous Lao Lianben is on many local collectors wishlists. This one, Tryst 7, should definitely be on the top of those lists. A very bold 1973 work that holds so much visual strength it isn’t easily forgotten, it is a delicious example from the artist’s 70s period.
