In a bid to amp up their sustainability efforts, supermarket chain Puregold announces the expansion of their 'No Plastic Use' program.

"We are now expanding Puregold's 'No Plastic Use' nationwide, and extending this to include Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 26, as we continue to work on operating more sustainably," said Puregold President Vincent Co.

Initially done once a week and only in Metro Manila, the expansion of the 'No Plastic Use' program is part of the supermarket chain's goal to reduce excessive use of plastic bags and encourage customers to make changes in the way they consume goods and aspects related to it such as packaging, and how it can impact our planet.

In line with the announcement, the supermarket will also give P1 cashback for every eco bag used by Perks and Tindahan ni Aling Puring members.

Since Puregold launched its No Plastic Use days in July 2022, the supermarket chain has saved more than 110,000 plastic bags in its NCR stores in the first month of the campaign's roll-out.

For the rest of 2022, Puregold is projecting another 30% reduction on its purchases of plastic bags from a year ago largely on the strength of this campaign.

Single-use plastics create huge amounts of waste. Plastic pollution is the biggest killer of marine life and is difficult to get rid of even when disposed properly.

"Plastic reduction is a high priority for Puregold and while we have made great strides, there is still a long way to go," said Co.

Puregold is also reviving its recycling program this September, where customers are encouraged to exchange their recyclable wastes for essential grocery items in designated Puregold stores.
