"Living with diabetes changed my life. I felt deprived."
It has been seven years since Normita Mendiola was first diagnosed with diabetes. The 51-year-old mother was worried about how she could manage this long-term condition. Normita had many questions: How to lower her blood sugar? What food could she eat? Will her health deteriorate?
"Before, I could eat whatever I want, and exercise [only] whenever I feel like it," Normita said.
"But now, I feel deprived of the food I want to eat and not being able to exercise like I used to kasi bago pa magsimula, pagod na ako (because before I even start, I would be tired already). I must admit, I could have done something about my condition earlier. But my health was not my priority then, so I was not able to."
64-year-old golfer Gerardo Rosario was in denial when he was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago.
"I used to be in top form, so I could not believe that I had diabetes," Gerardo said. "By the time I accepted it, it was too late."
Gerardo admitted having unhealthy eating habits, which would result in regular hunger pangs.
"I tend to eat junk foods for snacks and I would experience hypoglycemia," Gerardo said. "That is why I need to monitor my sugar levels, what I eat, and what I do."
Another patient, 41-year-old Cesar Manalaotao, leads an active lifestyle as a Philippine Army Reservist, but this did not spare him from having diabetes.
"Apat na taon na akong may diabetes," Cesar said. "Alam ko kasi na may family history kami ng diabetes. Kaya noong napansin ko na parang may sintomas na rin ako, hindi na ako nagulat na ang taas ng Fasting Blood Sugar [test] ko. Positive: may diabetes nga ako."
("I have been living with diabetes for four years now. I know that we have a family history of diabetes. When I noticed that I already have symptoms of this condition, I was not surprised when my Fasting Blood Sugar Test was high. Positive: I have diabetes.")
The 30-Day Challenge
Normita, Gerardo, and Cesar are among millions of Filipinos diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetes is a long-term condition in which your body cannot maintain healthy glucose levels in the blood. This may lead to high blood glucose levels, which may have long-term and short-term complications. With diabetes, the pancreas is not able to make insulin, not enough insulin, or when insulin is produced, it does not work effectively. Potential complications include heart attacks and strokes1.
This prompted Normita, Gerardo, and Cesar to take on the "Glucerna X Freestyle Libre 30-Day Challenge" to help improve their lifestyle and manage their condition by drinking a Diabetes Specific Formula for a whole month, as part of their diabetes management plan.
One of the prescribed formulas by doctors is Glucerna2. It is a complete and balanced diabetes nutrition drink that is clinically proven to help lower blood sugar levels, with proper diet and exercise.
Normita gamely accepted the 30-Day Challenge with both her wellness and family in mind.
"I am taking on this challenge because I realized that I really need to listen to my body now," said Normita. "My goal is to live longer so I can be with my family longer. I can not wait to see my apo (grandchild) grow up."
On top of this, Normita also realized the importance of boosting her immunity.
"Honestly, before, first set pa lang, pagod na ako. Kaya minsan, I do not even start (Before, I will already be tired during the first set. That is why sometimes, I do not even start exercising)," said Normita. "At first, I was worried that I will not be able to achieve my health goals, because I felt deprived of the food that I like, and I lost the energy to join zumba classes."
However, Normita said things changed when she drank a Diabetes Specific Formula.
"Since I started drinking Glucerna, I was able to take control of my sugar levels and sustain my energy longer."
Glucerna helped control Normita's blood sugar levels, as part of her type 2 diabetes management program with a balanced meal. Her blood sugar fluctuations are managed better resulting in more energy throughout the day. Now, she has more energy to exercise.
"I am thankful for Glucerna, because it helped me control my sugar levels. I was eating healthier, I was able to exercise more to boost my immunity."
For Gerardo, educating oneself is a crucial step when you have diabetes.
"Especially with medications," he said. "So, this led me to learn and explore more about supplements that can help my condition."
With this, Gerardo corrected his diet with the help of Glucerna.
Glucerna is formulated with a low glycemic index that can help manage blood glucose response, along with proper diet and exercise. Its advanced blend of slow release carbohydrates helps the body produce insulin naturally. Glucerna also contains four times more inositol versus previous formulation that helps the body convert sugar into energy.
"Since the 30 days are over, Glucerna has really helped control my sugar and reduce my A1C [blood test level]. See. [This is] definitely a big feat for me."
"Just educate yourself, listen to your healthcare providers, take your medicines on time, and make sure to do the necessary steps to improve your lifestyle – in my case, by drinking Glucerna."
"Do not lose hope. You should not give up on yourself. It all starts on your Day 1. The moment you decide to talk to your doctor, and try the 30-Day Challenge, results will follow."
Army reservist Cesar was eager to take the challenge to stay fit and top of his game.
"Siyempre hindi naging madali," Cesar said. "I had to accept that diabetes really changed my body, my health. Kailangan ng disiplina to get through the 30-Day Challenge. Buti na lang sanay ako sa disiplina dahil sa army training ko.
(Of course, it was not easy. I had to accept that diabetes really changed my body, my health. You need discipline to get through the 30-Day Challenge. It is a good thing that I am used to being disciplined because of my training in the Army.)"
"Sa 30-Day Challenge, natuto akong kumain ng mas mabuti with my Glucerna. Unti-unti, napansin ko rin na nabawasan yung timbang ko. Hindi ko nga napansin na magpa-slim ng katawan, pero happy ako, kasi nakakatulong 'yun sa pagkontrol sa diabetes."
(In the 30-Day Challenge, I learned how to eat healthily with my Glucerna. Slowly, I realized that my weight was going down. I did not even think of cutting down my weight, but I am happy because it helps control diabetes)."
With 28 vitamins and minerals on top of these key ingredients, Glucerna may help provide other important benefits such as curbing hunger pangs in between meals, and reducing weight and waistline circumference. It can also help support immunity3 - along with proper diet and exercise.
"Patapos na 'yung unang 30-Days Challenge ko. 30 Days pa? Kaya!"
("My first 30-Days Challenge is about to end. Now I can do another 30 days.")
Glucerna comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Wheat flavors. It also comes in a ready-to-drink bottle.
