VIGAN CITY - Western Visayas' thrower set a new Palarong Pambansa record while a barefoot runner from Camarines Sur stood tall in an issue-marred 3,000-meter race to lead gold medalists in Ilocos Sur on Monday.

Ann Katherine Quitoy of from Region 6 ran away with the gold medal in the javelin throw for secondary girls after a record-breaking 45.72m throw that dethroned defending champion and previous record holder Sylvian Faith Abunda.

Quitoy erased the 42.85m record of Abunda, tallied in last year's Palaro in Antique. Northern Mindanao's Abunda settled for silver medal this year after finishing with 41.28m.

Lheslie de Lima of Camarines Sur, on the other hand, cliched the first gold medal of the Games in fashion after finishing first in the 3,000m secondary girls. De Lima ran barefooted despite intense heat at the Quirino Stadium.

This was the first gold of De Lima at Palarong Pambansa after settling for three silvers in the past editions of the Games. The 13-year-old athlete is a daughter of a farmer in Baao, Camarines Sur.

However, De Lima's victory did not sit well for some competitors as confusion occurred during the run when the athletes exceeded the number of laps needed because of lack of warning bell.

National Capital Region also made their presence felt, amassing two gold medals in Day of 1 of Palaro. First-timer Christian Ampong of Manila booked the gold in javelin throw secondary boys division after tallying 58.51 meters.

NCR's Adrian Samudio grabbed the gold in elementary boys triple jump, reaching 11.46 meters.

Meanwhile, Cagayan Valley Region also flexed muscles after carting away two top podium finishes. Rashied Faith Burdeos coud not hold her tears after claiming the gold in the shot put elementary girls.

"Hindi ko talaga in-expect. Nagdasal lang talaga ako. Sabi ko, 'Lord, tulungan mo sana akong manalo.' Ayun, nanalo nga ako," Burdeos told ABS-CBN News.

Algin Gomez gave Region 2 its second gold in Palaro after topping the long jump competition with 6.96 numbers.

More medals are expected to be given out on Tuesday, April 17, as medal-rich sports such as swimming are set to start the competitions.
