MANILA, Philippines – No other Lady Tamaraw will ever wear No. 3 again after Far Eastern University (FEU) on Tuesday retired the number in honor of their iconic volleyball player Rachel Anne Daquis.

In a brief but meaningful ceremony attended by her family and her first collegiate coach, Kid Santos, Daquis' No. 3 jersey was raised to the rafters of the FEU Gym.

Daquis is only the third FEU athlete to have her jersey retired, after Arwind Santos (No. 19) and Johnny Abarrientos (No. 14), both basketball superstars.

In an emotional speech, Daquis remembered how she started in FEU, as a walk-on who did not know how to serve or spike or dig, but worked hard enough to make the line-up in her very first year. She went on to win the UAAP's Best Server honor in just her sophomore season, although at the time Daquis was reluctant to accept the award.

"Baka na-cute-an lang sa akin kaya binigay sa akin 'yung award," she said to laughter from the FEU students and student-athletes who watched the ceremony.

However, she won the award for the second time in her third year, and in 2008, she led the Lady Tamaraws to the UAAP championship, beating Adamson University in a nail-biting three-game series.

Daquis went on to have a glittering career in the semi-professional ranks as well, and was a member of the PSL-F2 Logistics Manila team that competed in the FIVB Women's Club World Championship in 2016.
