The Department of Transportation is suspending 671 public utility drivers for offenses committed over the Holy Week.

“This is the first time na ganito karami ang isususpinde, 671 ang isususpinde. Hindi lamang yung nagtest positive sa drugs, kundi lahat ng involved dun sa mga insidente,” said DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon during a press briefing.

He also confirmed that the bus driver recklessly driving in a viral video in La Union will have his license permanently revoked, after investigators said he committed the offense twice.

Those suspended for 90 days include 97 drivers who tested positive for illegal drug use during the holiday period, according to the department’s initial findings.

To address this issue, a special task force will be formed to combat drug and alcohol use among drivers, according to LTO Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza III.

He said an additional 1,700 personnel will join the effort.

Dizon added that companies employing reckless drivers will be held accountable. Each district will also be held responsible if they are found to have registered undeserving or unsightly vehicles.

“May liability ang kumpanya, papadalhan din ng show-cause orders ang kumpanya,” he said.

According to Dizon, the campaign will not end with the Holy Week and will be sustained through support from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Highway Patrol Group (HPG).
