MANILA - The two Bugatti Chiron sports cars confiscated by the Bureau of Customs are both owned by Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), according to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.

Imagine mo, nakabili sila o nakabili sila ng sasakyan, P170 million (rounded off) each, at hindi nagbayad ng buwis,” Gatchalian said in an online interview Friday.

Possession of smuggled expensive cars, he claimed, shows that those in the POGO industry are involved in criminal activities.

Gatchalian said he is still waiting for the plenary discussion of his penned chairman’s committee report that recommends a total ban on POGOs.

Gatchalian said his report may even be overtaken by a bill approved by a House of Representatives committee that also seeks to ban POGO.

“Baka maunahan pa ang Senado diyan,” he said.

Gatchalian said POGOs in the country can be immediately stopped by the executive department if it wants to do so.

 LOSS OF JOBS

Gatchalian last year submitted to the President a copy of his penned committee report recommending a total POGO ban.

However, the feedback he got is that the government is deeply concerned about the loss of jobs of around 20,000 POGO workers and another 40,000 people who benefit from the POGO industry.

“Dapat ang stance natin parati top on crime eh... basta criminal, dapat mahigpit tayo dyan. Walang dapat kapalit dahil buhay natin at katahimikan natin ang nakasalalay dyan,” he said.
