PUERTO GALERA — Local officials announced a state of calamity in Puerto Galera Tuesday afternoon, due to damage wrought on the resort town by typhoon Nina.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office earlier listed 1,222 partially damaged houses and 451 totally damaged homes in the Oriental Mindoro summer destination.

According to Mayor Rockey Ilagan, residents were also cut off from their water supply on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, at least 70 percent of homes had water back.

Volunteers repacked 150 sacks of rice, 100 boxes of canned goods and bottled water into relief packages to be distributed to 13 barangays on Wednesday.
