An online signature campaign is hoping to save the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex amid reports that Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada plans to convert the coliseum in the complex into a mall.

The Change.org petition “Save Rizal Memorial Sports Complex” is asking the Philippine government, specifically President Rodrigo Duterte and Estrada, to improve the complex instead of demolishing it.

It has already garnered 6,419 signatures as of posting time.

“Rizal Memorial Stadium, Coliseum, and the rest of the complex are architectural and historical gems, as it is designed in Art Deco style and has hosted different international matches. It is not only a gem; it is a functioning and international class sports facility," said the petition.

“This petition calls for the Manila City Government to improve the Sports Complex instead to be better and redevelop the Harrison Plaza-RMSC area into 60 percent open and green space,” it added.

Built in 1934, the complex has seen war, a performance by The Beatles, a game by baseball great Babe Ruth and several sporting events such as the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games among others.

Petitioners are also suggesting the adoption of a redevelopment plan proposed by Paulo Alcazaren.

Alcazaren wants to redevelop the Harrison Park complex and free its lands to connect the Rizal Memorial Complex to the park and nearby Manila Zoo.
