MANILA – Shocked victims of human rights abuses under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos took to the streets on Friday after his surprise burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes Cemetery).

Chanting “Marcos, no hero!” protesters wearing black shirts gathered at Philcoa in Quezon City to protest the internment, which came before the Supreme Court heard an appeal by the victims to reverse its decision that allowed the burial.

Policemen barricaded the Libingan ng mga Bayani, where Marcos was scheduled to be buried at noon alongside former presidents, national artists and war heroes.

“It’s high time that the people who will be directly affected by this, the victims of the Marcos dictatorship, will take to the streets and have their voices heard directly to show that this is not right,” human rights lawyer Barry Gutierrez said.
