DAVAO CITY - Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Tuesday vowed justice for the two-year-old boy who died over the weekend after allegedly being mauled by his guardians in Davao City.

"I already referred and endorsed that [case]. We have a special private prosecutor for this kind of case," Duterte told reporters.

The family of the victim will also receive burial assistance from the government, said the mayor.

Initial investigation showed the victim was allegedly mauled to death by guardians Sarah Jane Alcain and husband Ronilo, who got angry after the child urinated in his pants.

Duterte encouraged Davao residents to report similar child abuse cases to the Kean Gabriel Hotline (0908-818-4444), which was launched last month.

"They can easily report it anonymously and we will just process the information from our end. So we can prevent another child abuse case," she said.

The hotline was named after a three-year-old boy who died after sustaining injuries from being repeatedly hit with a wood by his stepfather while inside a sack.

Since the launch of the hotline, 18 cases have already referred to them and a nine-year-old boy was rescued, said Duterte.
