LEYTE - Several drugs and firearms were recovered from the jail cells of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. and inmate Raul Yap, who were both killed Saturday morning after an alleged gunfight with authorities.

A small sachet containing suspected shabu, drug paraphernalia, a .38-caliber Super and a magazine filled with live ammunition were recovered from Espinosa's cell, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 8 said in a statement.

On the other hand, 15 sachets of suspected shabu, 27 sachets of suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a .45-caliber pistol and a magazine with live ammunition were found in Yap's cell, the CIDG added.

The items were found after officials processed the shootout scene at the Baybay City Provincial Jail, it said.

The search warrant that was supposed to be served to Espinosa and Yap was issued by a court after an unnamed witness said the two were involved in the illegal drug trade inside the jail, officials said.

Espinosa was among the politicians linked by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade.

He surrendered to police in August after saying that he feared for his life amid the government's intensified campaign against illegal drugs.

His son, Kerwin, who was considered as one of the biggest drug lords in the Visayas, was nabbed in Abu Dhabi in October.

Police earlier said the Espinosas kept a log book that contained a list of personalities who allegedly received drug money, including Senator Leila de Lima.
