MANILA (UPDATED) President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday visited the wake of the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, his rival in the May 9 presidential election whom he had praised for her fearless charge against corruption.

Duterte went straight to the wake at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City, after arriving from Davao City. The visit was closed to media coverage.

The president stayed for around an hour and left at around 3:15 a.m.

Duterte and Santiago were among the friendlier rivals in the five-way race for the presidency. A show of mutual admiration during one of the debates spawned the viral hashtag "DuRiam."

Duterte's youngest son, Sebastian, had his picture taken with Santiago before another debate, and asked her to give his father the "fight of a lifetime."
