After former Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago quietly passed away Thursday, tributes for the feisty yet beloved government official flooded social media sites.

Santiago, who has millions of followers on her social media pages, was a top trending topic following news of her death with more than 30,000 tweets about her online as of 11:46 a.m.

This is no surprise as Miriam was one of the first politicians to tap social media for her political career. She currently has 3.7 million 'likes' on Facebook while she has 2.89 million followers on Twitter.

The hashtag #RIPMiriam Santiago has been used many times on the online platform.

Most Filipinos loved her tough-talking persona but netizens were more enamored by Santiago's witty one-liners and jokes she regularly posted online.

Some of her famous ones include a Facebook post shared and liked thousands of times saying: "Handbags? I don’t like them at all because they occupy my hands. My hands always have to be ready, in case I need to slap somebody.”

Santiago also shared a glimpse of her personal life, occasionally posting photos with her husband Narciso.

Her account also showed several "throwback" photos, including those taken when she was still a law student or was just starting her political career.

Some of her viral posts were quotes directed at political rivals.

Santiago passed away at 8:52 a.m. after a long bout with lung cancer.
