The Times Higher Education World University Rankings list the top 1,000 universities in the world. It bases its rankings oN 13 performance indicators grouped into the following areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
The 2018 rankings is led by two United Kingdom universities, which, according to the THE World University Rankings, is a first.
The University of Oxford landed on the number one spot for the second year in a row, while University of Cambridge is in the number 2 spot, up from last year's number 4.
California Institute of Technology and Stanford University, last year's second and third top university, are now tied in third place, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology remains in the fifth spot.
Peking University and Tsinghua University, both in China, occupy the 27th and the 30th spots, respectively. The rise of the two Chinese universities in the ranking is notable as they now outrank several prestigious institutions in Europe and the US.
Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore is still the best university in Asia, now at 22nd spot, up from last year's 24th spot. It shares the distinction of being the world's 22nd top university with the University of Toronto.
