DAVAO CITY – A pygmy sperm whale was found dead with plastic trash found in its stomach in the coastal area of Barangay Matina Aplaya last Sunday.

According to Darrell Blatchley, Davao-based American marine biologist, the whale was around 3 meters long and weighed about 100 to 200 kilos. It probably died two days before it was found.

Necropsy results showed that the whale was severely dehydrated due to plastic ingested that blocked its intestines.

Blatchley said 63 whales and dolphins were found dead in Davao Gulf since 2009. Of which, 47 have swallowed plastic trash mistaken as food.

Pygmy sperm whales eat mostly octopus and squid.

Blatchley urged the public to properly dispose of their garbage and to avoid throwing plastic in the ocean.

The whale was brought to D' Bone Collector Museum in Davao City where the bones will be displayed for educational purposes.

Blatchley posted on social media photos and videos of trash-filled canals in Davao. He called on authorities to take action.

Days after his post went viral, the local government of Davao cleaned the canals.
