Soil eroded under a house's backyard after a landslide was caused by a road-widening project in Baguio City, Wednesday.

BAGUIO CITY – A landslide occurred in the backyard of one of the houses in Barangay Upper QM, Baguio City on Wednesday.

The landslide was caused by an ongoing road-widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Joy Diaz, the owner of the backyard, said she felt unsafe after the landslide.

While the project is for the betterment of their area, she said the government should ensure their safety and make the residents’ wellness one of the government’s priorities.

Joy added that her family did not receive prior notice before the construction project started near their backyard.

DPWH Baguio Engineer Rene Zarate said the incident was unexpected. He added that the landslide was an accident and was caused by damp and weak soil.

Zarate said they are now carefully working on the project to avoid additional damage in the area.

Diaz’s backyard will be fixed in a week, authorities said.

The road widening is under DPWH Baguio’s Bypass Road Project. The city contracted JOMARCANN General Construction as its partner in the project.

The road is temporarily not accessible to large vehicles.
