MANILA - (UPDATED) A suspected sniper bullet hit a van rented by ABS-CBN News while parked near the provincial capitol in Marawi City Thursday, a few kilometers away from the center of fighting between state troops and terror groups.

The bullet hit the right side of the van near the rear wheel while ABS-CBN News cameraman Val Cuenca was inside. No one was hurt in the incident.

Authorities have yet to determine where the bullet came from.

"Akala ko kahoy, kaya lang malakas ang dating, so bumaba ako. Pagbaba ko, may tama na iyan," Cuenca told radio DZMM's Edwin Sevidal.

"Through and through ito, as in butas na butas. Talagang ibig sabihin ay malakas ang dating niya, hindi iyung nanggaling ng malayo."

(I initially thought a piece of wood hit the van, but it was too loud. When I went down, I saw a bullet pierced the van. It left a hole. This means the impact was strong, and it did not come from far away.)

Cuenca said a bullet also grazed the vehicle near the same area last June 12 as local officials observed Independence Day rites.

Thursday's incident happened just days after an Australian journalist covering the Marawi crisis was hit by an alleged sniper bullet, also at the provincial capitol. He survived the incident.

The military earlier said it had already driven away Islamic State-linked extremists from the center of Marawi. The terror groups, authorities said, were now confined to only 4 barangays a month since firefights began in the lakeside town.

At least 360 have died in the conflict since clashes erupted on May 23, among them 268 militants, 66 security personnel and 26 civilians. Hundreds of people are unaccounted for, with many believed to be hiding in basements around the city.
