MANILA - Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, a staunch critic of the Duterte administration, confirmed on Tuesday that he is running for senator in 2019.
Alejano said the party nominated him as their candidate for the midterm polls. The lawmaker said he accepted the nomination, believing independent-minded individuals are needed in the Senate.
His party-mate Senator Antonio Trillanes earlier said the nomination of Alejano was unanimous among the members of Magdalo.
Alejano and Trillanes have been vocal critics of President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs and the administration's dealings with China over the South China Sea dispute.

Both lawmakers have filed a supplemental complaint against President Duterte before the International Criminal Court, in support of an earlier complaint filed by lawyer Jude Sabio.
