MANILA - The operator of Resorts World Manila on Friday condemned the attack on its casino resort in the capital that left over 30 people killed, calling it a "cowardly act of a deranged mind."

A gunman fired shots and set portions of the casino ablaze and later died after he set himself on fire, police said. The man also allegedly took millions of pesos worth of casino chips.

"This cowardly act of a deranged mind will not defeat the spirit on which Resorts World Manila was built. With your prayers, we will overcome this tragedy, " Travellers International Hotel Group said in a statement to the stock exchange.

Shares of Travellers and casino operators Bloomberry Resorts and Melco Resorts and Entertainment tumbled on Friday following the attack, which came after government declared and enforced martial law in Mindanao due to the siege in Marawi City by ISIS-inspired militants.

Travellers said it has extended medical assistance to at least 54 people in hospitals. The statement to the stock exchange was released before authorities confirmed over 30 fatalities, apparently due to suffocation from the fire.

The company said its security team was coordinating with authorities as they investigate the incident.
