"Of course, the family is sad that we lost our matriarch, but, at the same time, we are at peace knowing that she has joined our creator," Kalaw told ABS-CBN News in a phone interview.

In view of Estrada-Kalaw's death, the Senate on Monday will immediately adjourn proceedings after the opening of the session, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III said.

Sotto said the chamber received news about the former lawmaker's demise Thursday afternoon.

The senator said the early adjournment is a sign of respect and has been part of Senate tradition every time a member or a former part of the institution dies.

The wake for Estrada-Kalaw will be held from May 29 to 31 at the Heritage Memorial Park, her granddaughter said. Her remains will then be brought to the Senate on June 1.

The wife of businessman Teodor Kalaw, Estrada-Kalaw served as senator from 1965 to 1972.
