MANILA (UPDATE) - President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday led the destruction of P61.6 million worth of smuggled luxury cars as he vowed to hold a crackdown against unscrupulous vehicle importers.
Destroyed at the port of Manila were 20 smuggled used cars, among which were the following models: Lexus ES300, BMW Alpina, BMW Z4, and Audi A6 Quattro.
Luxury vehicles were also destroyed in Davao City. Contributed video
Duterte, who has enforced a strict policy against corruption, announced his new policy on smuggled luxury vehicles on February 1 in a speech delivered before indigenous peoples in Davao City.

Duterte alleged some importers allowed the vehicles to be seized so they could buy them later at cheaper prices instead of having to pay taxes when they are auctioned off.
“I’ll bulldoze them this Tuesday. I’ve instructed Sid (Customs chief Isidro Lapeña). Don’t sell it because the situation will remain the same. They’ll still be the only ones who will benefit from it and they’ll be the only ones who’ll wait for the next auctions. It’s legal and it’s cheap because it’s auctioned,” he had said.
“Kayo lang ang may alam kung kailan ang auction. Binabastos ninyo ang Pilipino eh. Kaya ganoon. Marami kayong kotse pagkatapos ‘pag auction, bigyan kayo ng papel. Legal na mura pa.”
