MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said he will dissolve all anti-drugs groups within the Philippine National Police (PNP) following the kidnap-slay of Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo by rogue cops.
In a press briefing that started late Sunday evening, Duterte said he will put up a new anti-narcotics command.
"I will establish a new command. It could be a narcotics command or whatever appropriate name. But the name is not important," Duterte said.
According to the president, the new command will be partnered with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
Duterte also vouched for PDEA chief Isidro Lapeña, who previously served as chief of police of Davao City during Duterte's term as mayor.
"The overall head is the PDEA," Duterte said referring to the new planned command. "Like my older chiefs of police, Isidro (Lapeña) is once upon a time also a chief of Davao. I have no reason to doubt his integrity," he added.
Lapeña, for his part, said that there is an ongoing cleansing within PDEA to rid itself of corrupt enforcers.
