MANILA - The second phase of the Boracay Drainage Improvement Project, which is expected to resolve flooding problems in the tourism hotspot, is set to begin this month, Malacañang said.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority approved the implementation of the project that will be completed by 2020.

"This project consists of the construction of a pipeline diverting the treated drainage water into a wetland in Sitio Lugutan. Currently, the treated water is discharged at the Bulabog beach," he said Sunday.

"Indeed, we are committed to provide improved water quality services while mitigating the island's perennial flooding problems," added Roque referring to the reported floods in the island.

Tourism growth is expected to continue in the coming years as more flights and facilities are established in a place dubbed as "Island Paradise."

The Tourism Department earlier said it will continue to monitor establishments violating the the easement portion area of the white sand beach.
