MANILA - (UPDATED) Days after he backed out of the 2016 presidential race, OFW Family party-list Representative Roy Señeres Sr. passed away early Monday.

Señeres' son, RJ, told dzMM that the lawmaker succumbed to cardiac and pulmonary arrest at 8:07 a.m.

Señeres was earlier rushed to the intensive care unit of the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City.

RJ said his father's death came as a surprise to their family.

"Medyo kami rin po ay nagulat dito. Pero ang importante po rito is he is already pain-free. He's at least resting well," he said.

Señeres formally withdrew his bid for the presidency in the May 9 elections on Friday afternoon.

The former ambassador, who announced his bid to run for president under the ticket of the Partido ng Manggagawa at Magsasaka last October, cited health reasons for backing out of the race.

His lawyer said he was advised by his doctor to avoid stress that could aggravate his long-standing diabetes.

Señeres was supposed to personally submit a medical certificate to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) this week for his withdrawal from the elections.

The Señeres family has no plans yet on where his wake will be held.
