MANILA (UPDATED) - One woman was killed while 26 others were wounded, three of whom were in critical condition, in a vehicular accident in Taytay, Rizal on Tuesday morning.

Police investigator PO3 Erwin Salvador said a 10-wheeler truck loaded with construction materials plowed through bystanders and vehicles at the New Taytay Public Market after its brakes malfunctioned.

"Sa inisyal po nating imbestigasyon, nawalan po umano siya ng preno at medyo mabigat itong dala niyang sasakyan kaya medyo inararo na po niya itong gawing tiyanggian sa may palengke," Salvador told radio dzMM.

Twenty vehicles, mostly tricycles, were wrecked in the accident, which happened around 11 a.m.

Salvador said the lone fatality may have been a vendor or a shopper. He said the accident left the woman's face unrecognizable.

The truck driver, Tomas Baldonade, voluntarily surrendered to the police.

He denied that he was speeding at the time of the accident. He insisted that he lost control of the truck after its brakes malfunctioned.

Baldonade will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries, police said.

The victims, meanwhile, were rushed to different hospitals.
