DAVAO CITY - President Rodrigo Duterte returned to Manila on Sunday night to attend to various commitments in his first full working week as chief executive.

A reliable source told reporters here that Duterte left Davao City on board an RPC-280 aircraft at 9:40 p.m. He arrived in Manila around 11:20 p.m.

The president flew back to his hometown Davao City on Friday evening, a day after his inauguration last Thursday.

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar said Duterte, 71, spent the weekend in Davao City to rest.

Duterte is set to hold another Cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon at the Malacañang Palace.

The president has said he would govern the country both from Manila and Davao City and not mind dealing with Manila’s traffic and the two-hour plane ride.

A source earlier told ABS-CBN News that Duterte plans to spend four days in Manila and three days in Davao, respectively.

This schedule may change depending on the commitments the president will have to attend to.

Duterte's common-law wife Cielito 'Honeylet' Avanceña and their daughter, Veronica, plan to stay in Davao City.

When in Davao, Duterte is expected to hold office at a two-storey structure in Davao City’s Panacan village where he had spent most of his time receiving VIPs and well-wishers after winning the May 9 presidential election.

The president’s decision not to put all of his focus in so-called “Imperial Manila” is in line with his push to put more resources and focus on the provinces. His long-term political project is to change the country's form of government from unitary to federal by 2022.

Duterte partly blames the centralized form of government for widespread poverty in southern provinces, particularly in Muslim Mindanao.
