MANILA – President-elect Rodrigo Duterte will be sworn into office in a “simple” ceremony in Malacanang, which will not include Vice President-elect Leni Robredo, his top aide said Wednesday.

The “limited slots” in the presidential palace will not allow Robredo to invite as many guests as she wanted.

“This imposition will not be fair to Leni,” said Duterte’s assistant, Christopher 'Bong' Go, who is also a member of his inauguration committee.

This will mark the first time in decades that the country’s two highest elected officials will be inaugurated separately.

In another break from tradition, Duterte also has not offered a Cabinet position to the incoming vice president, saying he did not want to strain his friendship with Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who narrowly lost the vice presidency to Robredo.

Go said Duterte’s June 30 inaugural would be “simple yet meaningful, consistent with his principles on austerity.”

“We believe that Leni Robredo's family and supporters who worked hard for her deserve also to be present to celebrate her victory and this can only be possible through a separate inauguration,” he said.

Last week, incoming House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said a possible shift to federal-parliamentary form of government, which Duterte will push for, could eliminate the vice president position.
