MANILA (UPDATE) - Former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, according to her daughter, Assistant Secretary Lila Shahani.
“Mom diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which has since metastasized to her liver and lymph nodes,” the assistant secretary of the Cabinet cluster on human development and poverty reduction posted on her Facebook wall on May 20.
“She remains strong, as always, and is currently receiving several treatments. I am personally heartbroken. We would greatly appreciate your prayers,” Lila added.
The former Senate President Tempore and foreign policy expert is the sister of former President Fidel V. Ramos. She was deputy head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, former Philippine Ambassador to Australia and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Social and Humanitarian Affairs.
On Mother’s Day this year, Lila posted a family photo that included her mom, the former President, siblings and cousins.
Mrs. Shahani had attended a Senate hearing earlier this month on China’s encroachment on Philippine waters, where she criticized the government’s handling of the issue.
Even after stepping down from politics, Mrs. Shahani has remained outspoken on matters of governance. She pushed for the creation of a truth commission to tackle cases of corruption linked to the pork barrel system in 2013, when the P10-billion Janet Napoles scandal rocked the country.
