MANILA, Philippines -- Senator Franklin Drilon’s battle cry for a 12-0 sweep in the May polls for the candidates of Team PNoy is actually a “lust for power” and not a support for President Benigno Aquino III, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) secretary general and campaign manager Toby Tiangco claimed.
Drilon’s so-called motivation also further validated previous plots to oust Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile from the position, Tiangco added.
“We also know [now] why senate president Enrile is being targeted by the [Liberal Party] and their operators. It is in the service of Drilon's ambition to reclaim the senate presidency which he held during the Arroyo administration,” he said.
Drilon is one of the stalwarts of the LP, which coalesced with other political parties to form the administration Team PNoy for the May polls.
During a campaign sortie last week, re-electionist Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III announced that Drilon is the “future Senate President.”
“Nakakadismaya lang naman na hindi pa tapos ang eleksyon ay pinag-uusapan na nila ang premyo,” Tiangco said.
He said the prize of the senate presidency exposes the motivation of Drilon for his 12-0 dream -- not for the President’s program but more for his personal and political gains.
He also lamented that it is no less than Pimentel who made the statement. Pimentel, the president-on-leave of PDP-Laban, left UNA to join Team PNoy.
PDP-Laban coalesced with Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino to form UNA. Pimentel was one of those who signed a declaration of unity for the creation of UNA, until he left months after because of the coalition’s decision to include in its lineup his rival, former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.
“For Sen. Koko, medyo may konting sentimyento ang ilang miyembro ng PDP-Laban and were not comfortable with his endorsement of Drilon as next senate president. It was strange and insensitive to some extent, and the endorsement may have alienated many of his supporters,” Tiangco said.
