MANILA - Kris Aquino remembered the love story of her parents -- slain senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. and late president Corazon "Cory" Aquino -- on the Friday episode of her morning show, "Kris TV".
According to Kris, her parents were only engaged for 11 days.
She said a hit-and-run incident related to her father's negotations with Hukbong Bayan Laban sa mga Hapon or Hukbalahap led to the untimely proposal.
"My grandparents were at the time nasa Baguio daw. So ang dad ko, sa takot na baka sabihin na, 'layuan mo na 'yan, ang dangerous ng buhay' and whatever, nag-propose ng marriage.
"It just so happened na ang lolo and lola ko sa Cojuangco side ay October 11 'yung wedding anniversary. So within 11 days, kinasal. Ang galing no? Ang ganda ng story talaga," she told her guest co-hosts on "Kris TV".
"So 'yun, noong nagne-negotiate, nag-hit and run, tapos 'yun, dahil sa Hukbalahap at dahil sa pagkatilapon nila ay ikinasal. Ang ganda noong story no? Bongga," she added.
Ninoy and Cory tied the knot at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Pasay on October 11, 1954.
Kris happily shared that her mother was proud to have dated and married only one man in her lifetime.
"My mom was so proud of the fact that she only had one boyfriend in her life. She only kissed one man in her life. Tapos even noong nabiyuda na siya, ako sinasabi ko, 'mom maybe [you can date] Nelson Mandela, pwede mo siyang pakasalan.' Mga ganoon ang mga idea ko.
"Sabi ng mommy ko sa akin, 'Kristina, ano ba!' Not in her wildest dreams. Alam mo naman ako, may mga ideas lang ako," she said, laughing.
Today, August 1, is Mrs. Aquino's death anniversary.
