MANILA – The Top 5 finish of Catriona Gray in Miss World 2016 caused a social media outrage among Filipinos, prompting the beauty queen’s pageant mentor to send out a gentle reminder.

Jonas Gaffud – who has also trained the likes of Pia Wurtzbach (Miss Universe 2015), Megan Young (Miss World 2013) and Kylie Verzosa (Miss International 2016) – took to Instagram to ask Filipinos to respect the results of the recently concluded pageant.

Posting a photo of Miss World 2016 Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico, Gaffud wrote: “Hey c’mon, Philippines. If we won, no hatred on social media, right? But we did not. Let’s be proud as Filipinos and pageant fans of our girl, Catriona Gray. For us, she will always be our Miss World. But there are other families, friends and fans who root for their girls as well. I exchanged pleasantries with an older guy who was so proud of Miss Puerto Rico and he told me, he’s the father. I was touched by how happy he was for his daughter.”

“Remember this: We are not alone in this world. There are others,” he added, ending his post with the hashtag #beasport.

In another Instagram post, Gaffud admitted that he was hoping that Gray will win the country’s second Miss World crown. He said, however, that he is still proud of the Philippines’ Top 5 finish.

“Top 5 is tough. Wishing you the best on your future endeavors,” he wrote.
