A visit to the north will not be complete without tasting the famous delicacy called Ilocos miki.

The savory red-orange noodle soup is a favorite merienda treat among Ilocanos.

But aside from the plain miki and special miki which has hard-boiled egg, another must-try is a new version of Ilocos miki served at Seachelles Pagmiryendaan, a restaurant in Barangay 28, Laoag City.

The snackhouse is now becoming known in the city of its crispy miki noodle soup. According to owner Dennis Cariño, the concept was formulated by accident.

"Aksidente lang po 'yung pagkaka-discover nito. Tinry po naming [iprito] 'yung leftover namin na noodles... At nagustuhan naman ng family ko," he said.

("We only discovered it by accident. We tried frying our leftover noodles and my family enjoyed it.")

Priced at P50 per bowl, the crispy miki at Seachelles Pagmiryendaan is becoming a hit among customers not only in Laoag, but also in neighboring towns.

Customer Mel Cayetano noted the unique flavor of the broth as well as the bagnet toppings, which add crunch to the soup.

"One of a kind dito sa Ilocos. Iyon pa lang ang natitikman kong crispy miki. Marami siyang sahog at malasa (It's one of a kind here in Ilocos. That's the only crispy miki I've tried so far. It's loaded with toppings and it's very tasty)," Cayetano said.

Another satisfied customer said the dish is not only delicious but also "sulit" or value for money.

Meanwhile, KRM Foodhouse at Barangay 5 Vintar in Ilocos Norte is also serving an interesting version of Ilocos miki.
