ILOCOS SUR – The pre-medicine courses and medicine program of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in Vigan City continue to attract foreign students.

At the start of the new academic year Monday, at least 730 Indian nationals were enrolled in the school.

A total of 405 enrolled at the College of Medicine, while 110 were enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, where they are taking up pre-medicine courses like Psychology and Biology.

About 215, meanwhile, are enrolled in the Community Health Management program of the College of Health Sciences.

The university is becoming one of the top choices of Indian students because of the good performance of its graduates in the Ministry of India Medical Board Examination.

In 2013, a UNP graduate topped the board examination.

The cost of education in the university is also a consideration for the students.

“It’s more economical for us, the quality of education is the best and the climate condition is also similar to our place so comparing to other this is the best choice,” said Indian student Bharat Ajay Kumar.

“The way our lessons are being taught is easy and understandable and the faculty is accommodating and very supportive,” said Mahesh Dhandapan.

University president Dr. Gilbert Arce said they are strictly implementing their retention policy and screening process for students so the quality of education will not be compromised.

“I have been telling my colleagues in the university handling the foreign students, if a student fails or did not meet the general weighted average, they should be automatically out of the program,” Arce said.

The university also expects more foreign students in the next years.

For ANAKBAYAN Ilocos, the university should ensure that Filipino students will not be affected with the increase in the number of foreign students.

Aside from Indians, Indonesians, Thais, Nepalis, Angolans and Nigerians are also enrolled in the university.
