MANILA - Renowned Filipino artist Mauro "Malang" Santos passed away Saturday morning at the age of 89, his son and fellow creative Soler Santos said.

"Tatay Malang passed away this morning," the younger Santos said in a Facebook post.

Memorial services for the painter will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City from June 10 to 13, Malang's son said.

Malang, the mononym by which he has become known, started out as a cartoonist and an illustrator for the Manila Chronicle, where his comic strips entitled Kosme the Cop (Retired) and Chain Gang Charlie became a hit.
