MANILA (UPDATED)-- Former Filipina beauty queens were disappointed with Maxine Medina's performance in the question and answer portion for the top 6 candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant on Monday.

Host Steve Harvey asked Medina: “What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the world in the last 10 years?”

Audiences were surprised when an interpreter translated the question to Filipino but Medina still chose to answer in English.

"The last 10 years of being here in the world is that I saw all the people being in one event like this in Miss Universe, and it's something big to us that we are one, as one nation, we are all together," she answered.

Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran said she hoped Medina answered in Filipino instead. "She did her best pero sana nag-answer na lang siya in Tagalog," Moran said.

Alice Dixson, the country's representative to the Miss International pageant in 1986, felt Medina's answer did not match the question.

"Unfortunately doon sa question and answer portion, hindi swak ang sagot ng ating candidate and Maxine, hindi siya nakapasok sa (top) 3. Sayang. Everybody felt really bad but at least she got in the (top) 6. That's a big deal for us, 'di ba?" Dixson said.

Medina's supporters, meanwhile, said being Miss Universe is a matter of destiny and that placing among the top 6 is already a huge achievement. They still believe a lot more is in store for Maxine after the pageant.

"Mahirap talaga 'pag nandoon ka sa stage, bigla kang matatanong, then ang daming tao. She did her best. Every time she went out the stage, maganda 'yung performance niya. Making it to the top 6, okay na 'yun, kasi deserving din naman 'yung top 3," businessman Joel Cruz said.

Maxine's mother, Maria Fe Medina, defended her daughter's performance, saying that message in the Q&A segment actually happened because she felt the country unite during the pageant.

“What Maxine said a while ago, may unity siyang naramdaman. United ang mga Pilipino. Doon niya na-feel na mahal siya ng sambayanan,” she said. “To all of Maxine’s supporters, thank you so much for the prayers and support that you’ve given my daughter. Maraming maraming salamat.”

Medina made it to the top 6 of the pageant but lost to France's Iris Mittenaere who was crowned as the 65th Miss Universe.
