The House Committee on Justice has found one of the two impeachment complaints against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno sufficient in form and substance.

At least 30 members of the committee voted in favor of the complaint filed by Atty. Lorenzo Gadon, while 4 minority lawmakers said it was not sufficient in form.

The House panel, with the same vote, declared "sufficient in substance" the complaint, which accuses Sereno of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other high crimes.

Gadon said the "strongest" point in his complaint was the allegation that Sereno failed to make truthful declarations in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net worth or SALN.

Sereno's predecessor, Renato Corona, was impeached in 2011 and ousted from his position in 2012 for the same reason.

Sereno's camp on Wednesday asserted that the impeachment complaint found sufficient in form and substance against her lacked evidence and seemed aimed at maximizing "the political spectacle."

Gadon's complaint was endorsed by 25 lawmakers last month, making his the first one to move forward in the House of Representatives before the one from the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) and Vanguard.
