MANILA - It took the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to get the country's 2 highest officials--President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo--together for the first time.

Both were guests at the AFP Change of Command rites at Camp Aguinaldo on Friday, where Duterte was guest of honor as the new commander-in-chief and Robredo was also an invited guest.

Duterte and Robredo met for the first time as she stood up while Duterte ascended the stage after the military gave him arrival honors.

They sat one seat apart, with only the AFP chief in between them.

During the program, Duterte acknowledged Robredo first at the very start of his speech, noting it is the first time they met, and revealed he would have wanted to sit beside her if not for Secretary of Defense Delfin Lorenzana, who was seated beside Robredo.

After the program, the 2 leaders were seen chatting together. Duterte even offered Robredo a drink which she declined.

Later on, they posed for a picture together, before they both exited the stage.

In an ambush interview, Robredo revealed what they talked about.

"Ano naman very cordial ang meeting, nagpaalam ako sa kanya kung pwede ako magpa-set ng schedule ng courtesy visit. Pagbalik ko siguro sa office, iyon ang aasikasuhin ko na makapag-set kami ng meeting."

Robredo said they are looking at having an extended conversation and meeting soon. " Oo naman, mukhang welcome naman para sa kanya."

There was, however, no word yet as to when that will actually happen.

The inaugural of Duterte on Thursday was historical in that it was the first time there were separate inaugurations for president and vice president.

Duterte and Robredo came from different political parties in the last election.

Duterte skipped their proclamation as winners of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections.

Duterte has offered her no cabinet post, citing his friendship with her election rival, Bongbong Marcos.
