MANILA - From 40 contestants, only 25 boy band hopefuls were given a chance to advance to the next round of the reality talent search "Pinoy Boyband Superstar."

On Sunday, judges Vice Ganda, Sandara Park, Aga Muhlach and Yeng Constantino named the contest's top 20 contestants, who were divided into four groups of five boys.

The bottom 20 contestants were then divided into two groups, who had to perform a hit song from '90s boy band Backstreet Boys.

The members of the fifth group will be chosen from the bottom 20.

Two of those who made it to the top 25, Cesena and Reyes, also performed a Filipino song on Saturday's episode, as part of their assignment to learn the Filipino language.

Reyes performed "Kung Ako Na Lang Sana," while Cesena performed "Hallelujah."

Reyes received positive feedback on his performance, but Vice was not satisfied after knowing that Reyes does not really understand the lyrics of the song he sang.

"It's not just about learning the song. Ang challenge ko kasi, 'yung language, 'yung kapasidad magsalita nung lenggwahe. Katulad noon, kaya niyang kantahin, dahil sa tono, pero hindi niya nauunawaan ang sinasabi," Vice told his fellow judges.

Cesena, on the other hand, forgot the lyrics halfway through the song, but still received praise for maintaining his composure despite the incident.

"Lahat naman tayo may mistakes. Minsan nga 'yung mga professional singers, nakakalimutan din 'yung lyrics nila. Pero ang importante doon, hindi ka mag-stop. Hindi siya nag-stop eh," Park said, referring to Cesena's performance.

The five groups will be performing boy band hits on next week's performance night.

Hosted by Billy Crawford, "Pinoy Boyband Superstar" airs Saturdays after "Home Sweetie Home" and on Sundays after "Goin' Bulilit."
